Wakefield Choral Boosters and John Mullinax recently hosted the Wakefield Classic and Muscle Car Show on Saturday, October 11, at Wakefield High School to help raise money for the program.

“Many times I plan trips for the chorus to participate in, but often we do not have the funds to go.  So, I decided this year we would begin the ‘pay it forward’ approach to fundraising and to try to come up with ways that would attract folks that do not general support chorus concerts,” said John Mullinax, chorus teacher and creator of the event.

To successfully pay it forward, the car show was born.

“Car shows are a wonderful way for folks who are car enthusiasts to come and look at classic automobiles, to show off their own cars, and to talk about cars,” said Mullinax.

Approximately thirty cars were entered into the show to be judged hoping to win one of the 14 awards, ranging from Best of Show to People’s Choice.

“There was a nice diversity of cars, from a first generation Corvette to a modified 800 Horsepower Audi R8,” said Spencer Hart, spectator.

The show, according to Mullinax, helped bring about a sense of community.

“We received very positive feedback from the people that came to the show and said they would be back next year and bring friends with them,” said Mullinax. “We had more parental involvement than ever before for any choral booster fundraiser event.  I think the parents were surprised at how much they enjoyed getting to know each other during planning for the event.”

Mullinax and the Choral Boosters plan on making this an annual event.

“Next year, we are thinking about trying to get 1 PLATINUM sponsor (a Car Dealer) to bring in their high dollar cars to show,” said Mullinax.

Overall the show seemed to be a success in being both entertaining and beneficial.

“We did make a profit and had a lot of fun in the process,” said Mullinax.

The Wakefield Classic and Muscle Car Show is the perfect spot for anyone who has a passion for cars, regardless whether a student or community member.

“The car show is a great place to talk with guys that really know how to work on their cars, modify cars and to care for their cars,” says Mullinax.
