Poet of the Month: Sienna Stock

For the month of January, the Howler is featuring sophomore, Sienna Stock.

A Look at the Night Sky

The sky was all-encompassing,

an endless expanse;

an infinite.

My hands scratch across cracked pavement,

and my breath croaks out as smoke

binding into the dark

and unfurling before my eyes.

A speck

gazing upon the endless things;

endless possibilities

scattered like stones thrown across pavement.

I remember vividly

as a child

breaking rock against rock

and watching shards fly

not caring to pick up the pieces

focused on breaking down rock

into tinier and tinier pieces

one by one

bit by bit

until there was nothing.

Through growing eyes I see

the universe expanding,

contracting,

splitting and reforming into fixed shapes

to better fit its neighborhood.

And we sit

as humans

drowned in our own emotions,

overcome by sensibilities,

and stare out into this sphere

hoping for a reprieve.

To be spared in an advancing place,

immense and immeasurable,

hard and unforgiving to trained, educated eyes,

in hopes of catching only a glimpse;

a mere glance

at what there is to come for us all.

About the Poet:

My name is Sienna Stock and I’m a sophomore here at Wakefield. I wrote this poem just by thinking about a specific night I was extremely stressed out and decided to go outside at dusk. As far as meaning, it’s based on how truly insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things, but how we still find steady ground staring out into an otherwise unforgiving sky. I intend to pursue a career that somehow involves expressing myself through writing, as it has helped me find peace through the pressures of school.
