After making it to the finals of the state championship last season, the varsity women’s basketball team has continued to display resilience to keep their pace going. After having a rough start to the season, the girls have turned it around and are now second within the conference. The team, as of now, also has a winning record. If the girls keep their winning streak alive, they have a good chance of making it to the playoffs once again.
In order to be the first in the division, Wakefield needs to win more games against opponents within their division; Maddelyn Kusy, a junior on the team, speaks on why these next few games against teams in the conference are vital to helping Wakefield make the playoffs.
“The games are important, especially now that we’re in conference, [and] every possession matters,” Kusy said.
The team is currently 10-2 in the conference, but in order to keep that momentum going, they have to play to the best of their ability. Nicole Amend, junior and co-captain on the team, understands the determination the team needs to keep this streak going.
“We beat the first team in [the] conference,” Amend said. “So that shows that we definitely have the potential to keep winning.”

The bonds between the team members are very strong, since they are all one big family, and continue to stay on the same page. Jordan Holmes, a new junior to the team, talks of how the chemistry between the players has helped the team succeed.
“It’s a great environment to be around, and I wouldn’t trade this team for any other team that I have been on,” Holmes said.
This sense of family is helping them achieve their winning record. The camaraderie among the girls is going to hopefully push them towards more wins in the future, and even more teamwork during each game. Lyla Bagwell, a senior captain on the team, explains why they get along so well.
“The team chemistry is very close, and we all see each other so much,” Bagwell said. “Which makes us have good on-court chemistry as well.”
Each player’s actions have an effect on the game, and because all of the players are working together, the team is one step closer to a playoff spot. If this good form continues, it’s bound to lead to another exciting playoff berth.
“We have a goal as a team,” Holmes said. “And it takes everyone to be able to complete this.”
