Julian McLoughlin is a junior here at Wakefield, and has taken his dedication to community service and love for the environment and weaved it into his own personal passion project: Clean-Up 919. The organization, which McLoughlin founded and directs, began as an English project but eventually spewed into one of the largest student-led environmental organizations in the Triangle area.

“I ended up having a lot of fun doing the [project],” McLoughlin said. “And it turned into something much bigger [than what it started out as.]”

McLoughlin has allowed his interest in science to drive his pursuit for the Clean-Up 919 organization. He plans on majoring in aerospace engineering, however, he would love to continue the organization throughout his collegiate years. McLoughlin highlights the unique factor of Clean-Up 919 that has allowed it to succeed so far.

“It’s completely student-led,” McLoughlin said. “We’re trying to clean up as much of the Triangle as possible.”
