Rex Healthcare sponsored the Blood Drive which took place November 14, 2014 and November 15, 2014. Students who were seventeen years of age and 110 pounds and over were able to donate. Every pint of blood saves three lives, so the Blood Drive is a valuable community service opportunity for those able to participate.

The Blood Drive has the power to save many lives considering how many people donated.

“This blood drive we saved over 200 lives and donated almost 90 pints of blood,”said Amber Horton, a Social Studies teacher and the KEY Club advisor.

The students who were able to give blood also gave back.

“I gave back by giving blood,” said Logan Miller, a junior and a blood donor, “and I feel like I gave a lot of blood!”

The Blood Drive is sponsored by the KEY Club. However, the community of Wakefield and Rex Healthcare helped to make the blood drive possible.

“The students who want to donate, the teachers who help the student donate, and Rex help make the blood drive possible,” said Chance Caudill, a senior and another blood donor.

As mentioned before, participating in the blood drive is a good community service opportunity that does not take a lot of time.

“I think it is a great service,” said Horton, “It’s something easy and simple, and it doesn’t cost you a lot [or] take a lot out of you.”

Not only is donating blood beneficial for the recipient, but it helps give the donor information about themselves.

“They test your blood level and make sure you’re good,” said Miller, “If you have a disease don’t know about, they can tell you.”

There are incidents where people may need blood, so the blood drive helps for this reason.

“You help people who need it,” said Caudill, “ Otherwise, [they] wouldn’t be helped.”
