On Jan. 30, 2026, ¨Iron Lung,¨ a sci-fi and horror indie film based on the popular video game of the same name, was released in theaters. It is directed, produced and stars Mark Fischbach, also known as internet YouTube star Markiplier, who is most known for his gaming content of many popular Indie horror games, such as Five Nights at Freddy’s or Silent Hill. Viewer discretion is advised when viewing, as many scenes have depictions of slight gore and blood. This article contains spoilers for the entire Iron Lung movie.
The story starts in a post-apocalyptic future where humans have adapted to live on spaceships after a catastrophic event, known as The Quiet Rapture, which made the stars and planets all vanish in an instant. The human population is very limited, because the only survivors were those already living in space. In the darkness, four moons with blood oceans are discovered.
Simon, the main protagonist and a convict, was sentenced to explore one of these oceans in a submersible. He had been wrongfully charged with the destruction of a space station, which wiped out many survivors and valuable resources. After being charged, he is sent to explore the moon’s oceans inside a poorly-equipped submersible. A successful mission would grant him freedom, but one mistake could make him just another victim. With limited communications, meager amounts of oxygen and restricted space inside the submersible, he must navigate and survive the blood oceans, unknown creatures and horrors that hide in the darkness to learn more information about the mysterious moons.
Iron Lung is a wonderful movie due to its portrayal of themes related to isolation, hope and terror from our protagonist’s perspective, and the ambiance used. This is best shown in the latter half of the movie, when Simon slowly loses himself to hallucinations and the pressure placed on himself to descend deeper for more answers.
Iron Lung’s visuals are also a standout feature of the film. With all of the action occurring on a single set throughout the film, they not only relieved their limited budget but also cleverly heightened the suspense felt during moments of uncertainty. It gives the audience a sense of familiarity and oppression, both displayed and felt by Simon in his pursuit to gain freedom and frustration felt inside of the submarine. Additionally, it is used to add to the atmosphere of the movie. Most of the film showcases rusty browns, reds and blacks that help create a sense of discomfort, urgency and loneliness.
For many, Iron Lung isn’t just a passion project, but an inspiration. In this day and age, Hollywood Studios’ films lack individuality. Authentic and creative storytelling is becoming rarer to find. This film is an example of what can be achieved with passion, creative freedom, clever story directions and narrative. A unique adaptation of a video game turned horror movie that touches the hearts of many, Iron Lung’s success makes it apparent that the future of Indie films seems bright.
