Wakefield High School’s Student Council is setting out to get the student body pumped for this new school year. Taking lessons from years prior, they are committed to testing new ideas to promote school spirit.
The student council is in charge of planning events for Wakefield’s student body, filling students and teachers with school spirit. Laura Stiles, science teacher and adviser of the student council, expands on their past success in coordinating events.
“The student council did a lot of good activities to get the students involved, just to hype the kids up and get them to come back for [events],” Stiles said. “This past fall, I think they did a really great job with the pep rallies.”
Though the Student Council has experienced much success, they are driven to consistently improve. This year, the student council’s main focus is to integrate a larger group of students into the decision making process. Jack Tan, Student Body President, explains the importance of the student’s opinions.
“I’m trying to get the student council to pull the student body more so everybody’s voices are heard,” Tan said. “So, you’ll be seeing a lot more surveys and polls coming out this year.”
Not only do the opinions of Wakefield students matter but so does their sense of community. Claire Sykes, Student Body Vice-President prioritizes these connections.
“One thing we really want to work on is building a community within our Wakefield student body,” Sykes said.
Another main focus of the student council members this year is to emphasize diversity.
“We tried really hard to make sure we picked people for student council that are going to represent the student body as a whole and be able to be leaders and role models,” Stiles said.
The council is striving to keep communication high between themselves and the students. Reaching out to the school and making sure the students are aware of important events and news is key to their success this year. Lance Atkinson, Social Studies teacher and Student Council adviser recognizes why a bigger outreach is valuable.
“Being able to use things like the Wakefield news in the morning, to directly talk to the students [and say] ‘Hey here’s things that are going on, we need your feedback, we want your feedback,’” Atkinson said.
Not only is communication important, but so are the upcoming school events. The student council is working towards student involvement. Luna Garcia, Senior Class President, shares the importance of participation.
“I will say supporting your school and all sporting events would be really nice,” Garcia said. “You don’t have to be the most ‘go school’ person, but represent your classmates well. Not only that, but joining clubs as well.”
Most of all, the student council acts as a voice for the school and a backbone for the community. Atkinson stresses their biggest goal for this year.
“I want every student in this school to know who they can go to if they want something, or if they want to give feedback on something that we’re getting ready to do,” Atkinson said.
