The time has come for Wakefield High School to prepare for the upcoming Homecoming dance on Oct. 12. Wakefield’s Student Council is working diligently to make for a memorable Homecoming dance this fall.
The week leading up to the Homecoming dance is a great opportunity for Wakefield students to get involved with school events such as spirit week and the pep rally, concluded by an unforgettable Homecoming dance.
Lance Atkinson is one of the advisers for Wakefield High School’s Student Council. He supervises the plans for all STUCO-led student activities. Atkinson notes that this dance will be the first of many lasts for several.
“I expect that [underclassmen] attend, but I also want them to,” Atkinson said. “I think it’s a right of passage to some degree as well; it’s a fun time to be in high school and [it’s] something you’ll always remember.”
For underclassmen, Homecoming this year will not be a typical dance, as it is Wakefield’s 25th anniversary. Jack Tan, senior and Student Body President comments on the atmosphere of a typical Homecoming dance.
“Underclassmen should expect a different experience than their middle school dances,” Tan said. “There is a lot more effort put in and it’s a magical night to experience for the first time.”
Homecoming is a fun-filled event that will last the entire week of Oct. 7-12. Delilah Thorson is a senior and the Student Body Communications Director. Thorson acts as the head of the publicity committee and works with the rest of the department to ensure everything runs smoothly for Homecoming week.
“[Hall decorating] is one of the most fun things that we do [in student council] and it’s so exciting to see all the student council members participating,” Thorson said.
A key part of every Homecoming is the chosen theme. This year’s theme is ‘The Seasons of Wakefield’ to celebrate 25 years since Wakefield first opened. Atkinson remarks that the school has gone through many transformations throughout the years, similar to changing seasons.
“We started thinking about the different seasons of Wakefield and all the changes that have happened in 25 years,” Atkinson said. “Not only that but the changes that happen within a school year and the seasons that happen: fall, winter, summer and of course spring.”
As Wakefield’s 25th anniversary begins, the student council is working non-stop to prepare their theme for the dance.
“We figured out the theme and it’s the seasons of Wakefield for Homecoming week,” Thorson said. “We came up with a motto for [the Homecoming dance]: ‘Quarter of a century of Wakefield.’ ”
The Homecoming dance is set to be a memorable night for many. As the dance comes to an end, Wakefield students are reunited with a night of music and dance. Jared Dansky, a senior and chair of the student council publicity committee notes how the Homecoming dance brings the Wakefield community together.
“I love the dance,” Dansky said. “Everyone is just singing and jumping on the dance floor and not caring about what anybody thinks about them.”
