Best Trends of 2023
70s Styles
70s Styles

The 1970s is undoubtedly one of the most iconic eras of fashion in the 20th century. With striking floral patterns, voluminous hairstyles and funky silhouettes, the 70s is full of exciting trends worth replicating in 2023.

This year, we saw many 70s trends reemerge, such as curtain bangs. Popularized by “Charlie’s Angels” star Farrah Fawcett, this hairstyle has truly resurfaced. In 2023, the style was modernized, with many people lightly curling their curtain bangs rather than the 70s style which had more volume and movement.

Floral patterns also made a comeback. Seen all over London, Milan and Paris fashion weeks this year, floral prints ruled this spring. Commonly seen in flowy dresses and skirts, this groovy trend is sure to spice up any outfit.

Lastly, 2023 saw the rise of one of the most iconic trends from the decade: bell-shaped silhouettes. From sleeves to pant legs (known as bell bottoms), this trend is one of the most recognizable from the 1970s. Commonly worn by “hippies” at the time, bell shapes were dramatic and the center of attention of an outfit. In today’s interpretation, bell bottoms, better known as “flare leg pants” are less striking and can be worn to add subtle flare to an outfit.

The trends of the 1970s are certainly groovy, and I hope they stick around in the coming years.

Bows and Ribbons
Bows and Ribbons

When you scroll through hairstyles on Pinterest or other social media apps, what do you see in the pictures? More often than not, there are bows woven through a girl’s hair in the picture, providing a cute and elegant look to a simple half-up-half-down ponytail. The trend of bows and ribbons has sparked the world’s attention again, specifically among Generation Z.

Singer and songwriter Gracie Abrams has been widely recognized for her role in starting the trend of wearing ribboned bows with simple hairstyles this modern day. Listeners of Abrams mimicked the style, tying a bow in every braid and ponytail pulled back.

The trend of bows and ribbons in hair has been recurring for as long as the world can remember. The only thing that has changed is the style of bows and where they’re placed. In 2014, bows looked blocky and were made out of thick ribbed ribbons, glued to an uncomfortable barrette.

This past year, people tied ribboned bows on anything possible: gear shifts in the car, car mirrors, outfits, stuffed animals and so much more. The look of a ribbon bow on anything is incredibly pleasing to the eye. It’s soft and feminine, which is something that teen girls have been embracing.

The ribboned bow trend is definitely not going to fade out anytime soon. Style trends tend to repeat themselves over time, and it’s great to see this trend making a comeback. Hopefully, fashion culture will continue to see more of it in the future.

Cargo Pants
Cargo Pants

Primarily being a prevalent hit in the early 2000s, cargo pants have experienced a notable resurgence in popularity in 2023, becoming one of the best fashion trends of the year. Numerous people and celebrities, such as Rihanna and Kendall Jenner, have been seen styling these pants, in turn promoting them, and it is no wonder why: they are super versatile, durable and comfortable.

Cargo pants come in a wide variety of colors and materials, making it simple to form outfits. These pants can come in soft fabrics if being extra comfortable is sought, or heavy fabric to keep warm. One can style it with an oversized tee and sneakers for a more chic street-style look, or pair it with a fitted top or puffy jacket with boots if going for more of a dressed-up look.

They are known for effortlessly elevating everyday wear and being adaptable to different activities and locations, so no one has to worry about changing before outdoor adventures. These pants look phenomenal by the ocean, at the mountains, in a garden and in the city – it makes sense why so many people wear them.

I personally wear my cargo pants with fitted tops or sweatshirts with dunks and I absolutely adore how well the pants complete the look. Whenever I wear them, I constantly find myself making use of the many pockets to house valuable items such as wallets, keys or phones, especially when carrying a bag may be inconvenient.

Hopefully these pants are here to stay for good after making a comeback; it can be agreed their functionality and versatility cannot go unnoticed. Cargo pants are the perfect blend of being utilitarian and flattering.

Crochet

There is little that is more enjoyable than sitting on the couch, a fresh skein of yarn in your lap and a crochet pattern you can’t wait to finish. Though the craft of crocheting has been around for ages, this year saw an increase in the art, not just as a pastime but also in fashion.

Years ago, crocheting was seen as an “old lady activity” that few young people did. However, through TikTok, Instagram, and other social media platforms, many people from Generation Z have learned to crochet. With these videos, people can easily access patterns and inspirations for their next projects.

Crochet became a lot more popular in the fashion industry this year as well. At Coachella, a number of celebrities and patrons wore crochet crop tops, accessories and other items. Also, this summer, many women took to wearing crochet beach cover-ups and dresses.

This trend is one of my favorites to see in fashion because it is just what the environment needs. Since crochet items take a long time to make, as long as they are adequately paid for, they can help to limit the ever-increasing effects of “fast fashion,” where cheap clothing items are overproduced, contributing to pollution.

No matter the reason for crochet’s sudden spur in popularity, it is a fun fashion trend and an even more fun hobby. Whether you crochet to entertain yourself or you buy a crochet sweater because you think it’s cute, there is no doubt that it is one of the most unique and exciting trends of 2023.

Friendship Bracelets
Friendship Bracelets

For many years, people have made bracelets to symbolize their friendship together, especially at a young age. It is a fun way to spend time with friends and family. Recently, fans of consumable media such as movies, TV shows and music artists have decided to join in on the trend. For example, you can find people making bracelets for music artists such as Olivia Rodrigo and Harry Styles.

Friendship bracelets have been a part of history for many years but it has grown in popularity this year due to Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” Concert. In the community of Swift fans, making and trading friendship bracelets has been a popular trend at concerts. Fans of Swift make these bracelets to symbolize different songs of hers, the colors representing the different albums she has created.

People wear them at her concerts and other social events in decorative ways.  “The Eras Tour” bracelets have brought people to create their own for different communities, such as the Broadway community and other entertainment platforms. All kinds of bracelets of different colors and styles have been seen a lot this year.

In a way, I say that making bracelets brings people together because making friendship bracelets is something that you do with people you think of as your closest friends and family. In my own time, I do enjoy making friendship bracelets with others because I find it something fun to do when I am with friends.

“So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it,” said Swift in the song “You’re On Your Own, Kid.”

Stanley Cups
Stanley Cups

The best trend to blow up this year was the viral Stanley cup. This steel cup has been around since 1913, but in 2023 Stanley has taken the hydration game to the next level. This brand has been specializing in outdoor gear for 110 years, so it is no surprise they have mastered the water bottle. No matter what setting, it is likely that a handful of these water bottles will be sighted.

With the rise in reusable cups over plastic water bottles, the search for the perfect, durable, sturdy, yet aesthetically pleasing bottle is over.

The iconic 40-ounce tumbler is one of the brands top selling products. It features a lid with three different options: a straw opening, a wide mouth and a full-cover top. However, the attribute that seems to be a selling point for many is the shape. While many large bottles are not able to fit into cup holders in the car, this travel tumbler does just that.

The functionality and durability of the cups have won many over for over a century. Not only is the design of the cup great for any excursion, but the ability of the cup to keep cold drinks cool and hot drinks hot makes the experience even better. In fact, the tumbler has become so popular that some are reselling limited edition cups for more than double the original price. The need for the perfect cup has never been more clear.

Whether it is adventuring outdoors or simply using the tumbler in day-to-day life, this is a trend of 2023 that is well deserved.

Susi Stitch
Susi Stitch

Who knew that a simple word like pesto could transform into a trend where people share their wildest memories and deepest secrets? Susi Vidal, a 25-year-old TikTok influencer, shares her recipes and storytimes with her audience on the internet. This year, Vidal created a video beginning with, “Call me crazy if you want, but I’ve never liked store-bought pesto,” where she gives her recipe for a simple homemade pesto. The TikTok stitches took over that night, and her audience, as well as many new viewers, began to explain how the stories they can share are even crazier.

Storytelling videos have already become popular in 2023, but Vidal’s video created a perfect introduction to share hundreds of thousands of insane experiences. From break-up incidents to paranormal experiences, there is truly nothing that hasn’t been stitched to Vidal’s video. For example, a TikToker named Chelsea (herpaperroute) shares a story about a typical day when an older man walks into the bar where she works, but little did she know that she would help him find his long-lost daughter whom he never knew existed. Or how a girl died in a car crash and was able to come out of her body and watch the crime scene from a different perspective before returning to her body once again.

Vidal is also taking part in her own trend by sharing a storytime that occurred in her life and giving thanks to her audience that took the time to duet her video.

Many fascinating stories such as this one would have been overlooked and missed out on by the public if it wasn’t for the Susi Stitch. Don’t call me crazy, but I think the stories being shared from this trend will be remembered forever.
