2019 NC State Fair food ranked from best to ‘hard to digest’

Thousands swarm from across the state each year in search of exciting attractions: wild rides and most importantly, out of this world food. From deep fried oreos to pumpkin spiced corn, the 2019 fair food menu sure is bizarre.

The North Carolina State Fair, the yearly festival of food and fun. Thousands swarm from across the state each year in search of exciting attractions: wild rides and most importantly, out of this world food. From deep-fried Oreos to pumpkin-spiced corn, the 2019 fair food menu sure is bizarre. Here’s our line up of this year’s most notable foods at the NC State Fair.

Reese’s Donut

This seven-inch wide donut is fried, smothered in chocolate, and then topped with Reese’s Pieces and peanuts.  This beautiful sundae was heaven on a plate. Many delicious toppings were offered such as M&Ms, gummy bears, and bacon. Fairgoers also have the option to turn the donut into a towering sundae with rich vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup.

Wisconsin Cheese Curds

These gooey, buttery curds are the star of the show in terms of savory food. When I pulled it open a river of cheese flowed out. Offered in both plain and garlic flavored, this meal was, unfortunately, one of the greasiest dishes of the day while also being the tastiest.

Stuffed Cubano Baguette

This wonderful dish is a toasted baguette filled with fresh pulled pork and mozzarella, with a Cubano-lime sauce to top it off. The pièce de résistance was an imprint of the NC border pressed into the bread. This sandwich is the definition of local flavor!

Keto Meat Pizza

From the outside, this dish looks like a typical deep dish pizza, but in reality, it’s essentially a six-inch meatball. A mixture of ground pork and beef forms the base of a delicious avocado pie. The “crust” is spiced with pepper, sage, and fennel seed.

Foot Long Turkey Leg

Monstrosity is the only way to describe this. Although very appetizing, the amount of salt in this creation is the reason this dish was not at the very top. Prepare to have an extremely full stomach after devouring this one!

One of the disappointing foods of the day. The lamb was thick, chewy, and it tasted more like pork, but the sour cream sauce on top was the saving grace of the whole meal.

Fried Jalapeños

Simple but delicious, these flaming hot peppers are deep-fried in batter and stuffed with homemade brisket. They were flaming hot and balanced perfectly with the salty brisket. What more could a foodie ask for?

Fried Oreos

After hearing many good things about this dish I decided to try the infamous fried oreo. First off, I was disappointed in the vendor’s lack of Oreo variety and topping choice. Unfortunately, once I got through the line, I could barely taste the Oreo because of all the batter. Covered in grease and extremely chewy, this was not for me.

Sloppy Joe Waffle

A waffle with chili on it? My brain could not comprehend how this would taste so I had to try it. Needless to say, this was a horrible combination. Why ruin something as wonderful as a waffle with soggy chili and cheese?

Red Velvet Enchilada Funnel Cake

This was quite possibly the worst food combinations I have ever digested. Salty cheese and sickly sweet red velvet cake mixed together? No with a capital N.
