While dressing up in funny costumes and showing Wakefield pride, students can easily get caught up in the fun of homecoming week, but it is important to remember the true importance of the week.

“We always hope every year to build spirit,” said Emily Scales, the SGA advisor.  “We like students to get involved.”

Getting students involved is not only exciting, but it is significant in building a strong alumni network.

“If we have a good spirit week and a good homecoming, then people will want to come back,” said Scales.

At the end of the week, the students get together for a pep rally that includes performances from the dance team, the cheerleading squad, and includes fun games and competitions for all students to enjoy.

“The pep rally gets us pumped for the game,” said Scales.  “It also helps build loyalty and pride among the classes.  I also like that the freshmen get on main campus.  This helps incorporate them in to some school-wide activities.”

Since having a successful homecoming week is so important, organizing it can be a daunting task.

“There are a lot of people and different personalities that are involved in organizing and decorating for homecoming,” said Sabrina Madrigal, Digital Media Publicist.  “It’s hard to form all of our ideas into one that’s going to work for everyone.”

Not only is it difficult to please everyone during homecoming week, organizing music that fits to everyone’s taste can be even more challenging.

“Nick Cirone, this year’s DJ, had to go through and ask people what they want to hear and see what works best together,” said Spencer Hart of H&H Productions, the outfit that DJ’d this year’s homecoming.  “Figuring out what’s happening when and where and the timing of everything can be difficult.”

Although the planning may be difficult, homecoming serves a great purpose and the week establishes traditions for our relatively new school.

“I like traditions,” said Scales, “as a younger school, I think it’s important to build traditions to build alumni.”

It is most important, though, to remember to have fun and show school spirit throughout homecoming week.

“We really appreciate it when people get involved,” Scales said.  “I think it’s important to have fun at school sometimes.  It can’t all be about AP tests and PSAT testing.”
