Men’s soccer team primed for playoffs
November 4, 2014
The Wakefield High School men’s varsity soccer team has fought a tough season to get the record of 10-9-2. Coach Komons and Captains David Adams and Wesley Skinner led the team on their journey this season.
Now that the season is over, teammates reflect on goals for playoffs as well as using experiences from this season to rebuild for next year. Several strong seniors that won’t be returning next year are Wesley Skinner, Santiago Zapata, Ryan Thompson, Brendan Ngo, David Adams, and Joseph Robbins. Some of these players share their thoughts about the season.
“We didn’t do very well but we deserved to do a lot better,” said senior Santiago Zapata. “We had great players and great talent.”
Zapata, along with Skinner considers events from this past season and how the team might prepare for playoffs. Skinner believes the team has improved.
“We’re going to make the state playoffs, which is good,” said Skinner. “We didn’t make the playoffs last year so this is definitely an improvement since then.”
In addition to preparing for the playoffs, the players plan to improve even more for next year. They are already thinking of what to do differently in order to do better next year.
“Defensively we let up a lot of soft goals,” said senior Ryan Thompson. “That’s one area we could improve.”
One aspect of team-building is spending time together. Teammates agree that the more time the team spent together the better they saw themselves doing.
“When we actually started bonding together we started winning,” said goalie Jordan Dean. “We love the game.”
The Wackos also love the game. They tried to make a large appearance at the games to cheer on their school. They want to make sure that the players know that they have the school’s support whether they win or lose.
“My favorite game was the home game against Sanderson,” said Zapata. “All the Wackos were out there and made it really exciting.”
This game was important to the team because Sanderson High School is one of the top competitors when it comes to men’s soccer. Wakefield ended up winning this game.
Dean and Thompson both agreed that Thompson’s half field goal against Jordan High School was the most memorable play from this season.
“It just deflected,” said Thompson. “It was really lucky but it went in.”
On Wednesday, October 29 the team played their first playoff game against Green Hope High School and lost 3-0. This loss ended the season for the team.
“We worked hard and we trained hard,” said Dean. “Overall we had a good season.”
