Run the Jewels 2

The most recent collaboration between rapper/producer duo Killer Mike and El-P, dubbed Run the Jewels after their first mixtape, is one of, if not the best, albums of 2014. Run the Jewels 2 capitalizes on everything that Run the Jewels did and takes it further in almost every aspect. It’s stronger, faster and more versatile. Unafraid to tell anyone what they think, Mike and El pull no punches, something they make very clear on the opening track, “Jeopardy,” which is a warning to anyone who thinks they can try to flex on the two.

Standout tracks include “Oh My Darling Don’t Cry,” a song that either converts or kills haters with absolute fire; “Lie Cheat Steal” and “Early,” songs about the power structure of the world and police misconduct; and “Crown feat. Diane Coffee,” which, is actually also about power structure and the organizations that run much of our daily lives.

The duo hold strong opinions and they aren’t going to soften them for anyone. They share what they think, regardless of what you think you’re hearing, with metaphors that would make any English teacher proud. Shocked too, most likely.
