Indoor track and field program plans for continued success
January 6, 2015
On November 10, practice began for the 2014-2015 season of indoor track. Students all across North Carolina made sure they had their forms turned in and their shoes tied tight for another season of running, sprinting, hurdling, and more. The girls of Wakefield are coming off a stellar season in which they fell just short of first place in the state championships after winning it three years straight. The boys came in thirteenth, but don’t sell them short, they did well in individual events like the 4×4 relay, where they placed third.
After winning three straight state championships in 2011, 2012, and 2013, the girls of Wakefield’s indoor track team fell just short of winning it all again last year, where they came in second place. Junior Angela Delfino, who runs in the 800 and 1000 meter events, is looking forward to the new season, and hopes to continue the success that Wakefield is so accustomed to.
“We’re just going to have everyone keep working really hard, run as many events as we can, and make sure we’re scoring as much as we possibly can,” she said. “We’re a lot younger this year, but I think we’re a lot more powerful and diverse.”
The men of Wakefield haven’t been quite as successful, and haven’t ever won the overall championship at states. They have the potential to change that this year. “Every year is different because we may be strong in different areas than before,” said Coach Anne Graham. They have a lot of work to do, though.
Senior Joseph Osewe, who runs the 300 meter, is ready for this year, but acknowledges that there is work to be done. “Our 4×4 actually placed third overall, but three of our members graduated, so we have some building up to do.”
Despite a number of personnel losses in both the men and women’s groups, Coach Graham believes her team can do anything if they work hard enough.
“The team trains hard so I have no doubt if they want the win they will get it. Attitude determines the altitude of their success,” Graham said. “There is always room for improvement and as long as the team continues to build off the previous year I expect improvement in most events.”
Wakefield is geared up and ready for a new season of indoor track. With the loss of last year’s seniors, much is expected of underclassmen like Taylor Scott, a freshman that is new to Wakefield. Both the men and women expect much from their teammates, as they rely on each other to perform well in order to place well in group competition.
“Knowing that you’re running for your team makes you realize what you’re doing it for. It’s a lot easier to do better for someone else than it is for yourself,” Delfino said.
Coach Graham believes her team will be more than ready to perform when it comes time for competition, but we’ll have to wait to find out about any breakout stars and groups.
“I will just say I don’t like to show my hand if I expect to win but it has something to do with running, jumping, and throwing,” said Graham.
