Simone Biles

Representing the United States is not an easy task, yet Simone Arianne Biles makes it seem so effortless. First female African-American all-around world champion, first woman gymnast to win three consecutive World all-around titles, and first American woman in 23 years to win three all-around national titles, are just a few accomplishments the 21-year-old has made.

Even if you aren’t familiar with her previous gymnast achievements, watching her will tell you enough about her story. Her talent is rare, and her dedication to the sport is even more remarkable. Even at her young age, she has proven a great share of maturity, to not only the sport, but the world. Going to the Olympics is a great addition to her resume by itself, but adding the countless medals, with unbeatable ranks, brings her to the most desired athlete in 2018. ESPN magazine featured Biles as their  “2018 Most Dominant Athlete of the Year” and it’s difficult to argue otherwise. Her gifts, beauty, compassion, sportsmanship, and advocacy all contribute to the type of person Biles is, on and off the floor.

Recently, Biles opened up about her struggles with depression, as well as anxiety, after coping with the sexual abuse of her previous personal trainer. The amount of courage and strength that prevailed through her hardships is simply remarkable. Through her advocacy, she has opened doors for several other female athletes to open up about the abuse and help them to find justice for their situations.

Confidence is a key trait for any athlete if they want to pursue a long career. Biles is a great demonstration of confidence in how she walks, how she talks, and how she is able to perform as an athlete. The bold energy that penetrates after each performance leaves viewers with goosebumps. Simone Biles may be 4’8”, but she can command the room like an army sergeant. Strength,  but poise inhabit her movements, as she captures the audience to watch her grace every event. Leaving a legacy that will be embraced for generations to come, that is what Biles has done as an athlete.
