As exam season begins, students often find themselves overwhelmed and anxious. While studying is crucial to succeed in tests, it’s also equally important to prioritize mental health and decompress. Practicing relaxation techniques such as exercising, doing a creative activity or meditating will enhance focus and lead to a successful end of the year.

Creative activity: Finding a way to get in touch with your creative side, such as painting, drawing, dancing or playing an instrument, can provide an escape from the academic pressures of exam season. Many art therapists use art to help clients release toxic emotions and feelings, leading to a more positive, relaxed environment. Taking just a few minutes to draw in an adult coloring book or finish a Lego set can sound ridiculous, but it is a great way to express yourself and stimulate your mind.

Meditation: While participating in exam preparation, taking moments to calm down and relax can be extremely beneficial to productivity. Sitting quietly, focusing on breathing exercises and not focusing on the task at hand for even a few minutes can make anybody feel like they’re a new person. Mediation can look different for everybody as well. Some might enjoy the quiet, while others enjoy calming music. Different meditation apps and sites can be used to find out what strategies work best.

Exercise: Doing some type of physical activity daily is one of the best ways to decrease stress and create a more positive mindset. There are endless ways to exercise the body and mind, such as going on a walk, doing yoga, tennis or spending time at the gym. Incorporating an exercise routine during exam season will not only improve mental clarity and focus but also provide a great way to relax and step away from the textbooks.

Although this can be one of the most stressful times of the year for students, it also marks the end of a year full of hard work and perseverance. Trying any of these activities is a great way to appreciate the year and get through a time.
