BeReal

“It’s time to BeReal,” is a phrase we have become very accustomed to hearing yelled out in the middle of just about anything, just about anywhere. Authenticity has become something people crave in 2022. People are sick of seeing influencers posed perfectly, in perfect lighting, in pictures that were most likely taken during a scheduled photoshoot.

BeReal is an app created as an attempt for people to be more authentic and real with each other. There are no filters, stickers or ways to edit the picture — and that’s the point. You’re just supposed to “be real.” The app is less about gaining followers and building a platform, and more about spontaneously posting when the “minutes left to BeReal” notification comes across your screen.

In the two-minute time period, you take a picture with the dual camera. People can see both what you are doing and what you look like. Whether you are eating dinner, on vacation, or simply sitting on the couch, BeReal will capture whatever moment you are in.

You can also add a “RealMoji,” or a reaction, to your friend’s posts. These take the place of the emojis that would usually be commented. There are five “RealMoji” options that will save your picture so you can easily send them anytime, or you can take one in the moment and send that.

As the moments begin to add up, you can look back at all your memories made on the app. By clicking on your profile, you will be brought to a calendar that shows every BeReal you have posted. This is a great way to look back and reminisce on important moments of your life.

BeReal is taking a stab at ending the toxic, filtered side of social media. The authenticity and spontaneity are what make BeReal the best trend of 2022.
