“Six the Musical” focuses on the six wives of Henry VIII, reclaiming their stories through a killer soundtrack. This historical story is given a wonderfully modern twist through its pop music style.

Each of these amazing women has a solo song where they tell the audience who they are and what they went through. Catherine of Aragon kicks these numbers off with “No Way,” where she denies Henry a divorce and holds onto her title of queen. Anyone with TikTok has likely heard the lyrics ‘don’t be bitter, ’cause I’m fitter’ from “Don’t Lose Your Head” sung by Anne Boylen; however, Katherine Howard has a similar song, “All You Wanna Do,” that is in the Britney Spears and Ariana Grande style pop.

To complete this album, these women join together to sing a powerful song about their individuality and character. “Six” is a song where each queen gets the chance to shine in her own light as her friends celebrate her magnificence.

This album is a wonderful representation of women for other women. Each of these unique ladies has been reduced throughout the centuries to a wife of Henry VIII, but this soundtrack gives them back their voice. The message of celebrating each other’s differences and not putting one woman against another is really powerful and this album conveys it while making you want to dance at the same time.

The inspiring lyrics and beautiful musicality of this soundtrack were recognized in 2022 when it won the Tony Award for Best Original Score written for theatre. This soundtrack is sure to make you laugh, cry and everything in between so if you haven’t listened to it yet make sure to before the show comes to the Durham Performing Arts Center in June of 2023.
