Last year, when registering for classes, I was looking for another elective to take. A few friends from my theatre class mentioned newspaper and told me they thought I would enjoy being on The Howler staff. After primarily participating in theatre and band throughout high school, I decided to take a chance on a different course and applied to write for The Howler. Even though this school year was way out of the ordinary, I am beyond thankful to have joined the newspaper. I have become a more confident writer, learned how to use my voice in an effective way and gained valuable leadership skills.

Even though the majority of our school year was virtual, it was a pleasure to return to the building for the last few months of high school. Every day I was excited to walk into fourth period ready to make the most of the time we had left. Through the newspaper, I have made lasting connections with people that I would not have otherwise connected with, and for that, I am forever grateful. These past 9 months of school have both flown by and also felt like the longest 9 months ever. There were some tough days and weeks, but I was always encouraged to look for the bright side when asked to share my Fri-yay to wrap up the week. I have loved every moment of brainstorming for issues, researching and writing, and editing articles.

Thank you to Ms. Tekotte for giving me the opportunity to be the News section editor and for providing us with the platform to express ourselves. While I’m naturally a little nervous for the next chapter of my life, I am entering it with confidence because of my role on The Howler’s staff. High school is this little blip in our lives, and I’m pleased to say I spent it doing something I love. The Howler, thank you for helping me find my voice and for allowing me the space to grow and change towards the best version of myself.
