#MeToo Movement

The string of sexual assault and harassment allegations that emerged against producer Harvey Weinstein in October was an extremely important and powerful event for the brave women who accused him. They could never have imagined the incredible effect that their accusations could have on the movie industry or the world as a whole.

The allegations against Weinstein immediately opened up the floodgates, inspiring bravery in countless other women who publicly announced their inappropriate and often horrific experiences with men who possessed power and influence like Weinstein’s. Tagged with #MeToo, women, and even men, used social media to show the world how so many men are abusing their power by committing acts of sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct against people who are just trying to make it in the industry.

Time has a list of the ever-increasing amount of public figures who have been facing allegations like the ones against Weinstein, which is currently at 115 people. The movement has left women feeling empowered to finally be able to openly share their experiences. Fear is powerful in situations like these, so overcoming this fear and knowing that the world will listen has been the first major step in ridding the world of the abuse of power as well as sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct in general.
