80s style

2017 saw a major comeback of 80s and 90s style clothing and accessories.  Trends like color block shirts and sweaters, denim and plaid skirts, fishnets, band t-shirts, round glasses, scrunchies, “mom jeans” and platform shoes resurfaced this past year, bringing a vintage touch to the modern era.  Throwback style is one of the trends that is actually trendy and will look great carrying over into 2018!

Shirts:  Color blocked bathing suits, sweaters, shirts, and jackets have been seen almost everywhere this year, allowing for a vibrant and colorful 2017.  Sweaters and jackets like these two were prominent trends this year, and will absolutely carry into 2018!

Glasses:  Circle-shaped and oversized glasses have been on the rise this year, as well as clear glasses, bringing us back to times of PacMan and Bon Jovi.  Clear and round glasses go with any style and outfit, and look great on every face shape- both men and women! This is a trend that I would love to see in 2018.

‘Mom’ and ‘dad’ jeans:  Mom’ and ‘dad’ jeans are baggy, high waisted, usually light washed, and they match with any shirt and shoe combination.  These jeans are comfy and trendy, allowing anyone to style them up for a party, or down for a casual lazy day.

Shoes:  This summer saw a rise in Birkenstocks, a 70’s trend, but also a rise of platform sandals, especially solid white or black ones.  2017 was also encompassed with ‘vintage’-style sneakers, following the colorblock trend.

Accessories:  Many 80’s and 90’s style accessories made a comeback this year, but among the most notable were fanny packs, scrunchies, and fishnet tights.  All of these show a modern twist to the throwback classics, especially the velvet scrunchies, since velvet was also a trend this year.  Fishnets were worn in every way possible this year, from with low rise jeans and a cropped top, skirts, and even whole fishnet bodysuits.

We by gnash

In January of 2019, singer, songwriter, rapper and producer, gnash released his debut album, we. The long-awaited release came after three EPs and multiple singles that had been gaining him recognition since 2015. We includes gnash’s hit single i hate u, i love you, which helped to increase his following.

Gnash’s album is an alt-pop ode to the struggle of life. However, he is constantly reminding himself (and us) that there is happiness and hope in the little things. Gnash sings a stripped-down version of insecurity, heartbreak and loneliness, all with the goal of making his audience feel understood.

In the song broken hearts club, gnash transitions from the lyric “I need emotion novocaine, I need a numbing of my brain,” to “We’re dying to invite you to stay, and take away the pain. ‘Cause misery loves company, so hey, what do you say?”

The album encompasses both the deepest pains we experience, as well as the recovery. Gnash highlights the importance of accepting help from others and feeling things freely. His purpose is to connect with his audience and create a place for them to experience their emotions with him. Here, gnash quotes his song, feel better, to define his album.

“All the things I wrote about on we are things I thought we could all feel together,” gnash said in an interview, “Because if we feel together, then we’ll feel better.”

The vocals on the album are impressive but in an unusual way. They are soft at most times, almost welcoming, and harsh and emotional at others. The fluctuation adds deeply felt emotion; the songs sound genuine because of the vocals.

Music this honest is rare. The heart-wrenching lyrics, soft vocals and understanding tone make this album beautiful.
