Beyonce takes a bold stand on the “myth” of gender equality

A myth is something that does not exist, just like gender equality.

Recently on the Shriver Report, pop-culture phenomena Beyonce took a stand on gender equality by making a rather bold statement: “We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality.” The superstar blatantly calls gender equality a myth to pack a punch.

Gender equality does not exist thus, it is a myth. There are a lot of issues pertaining to the gender equality or the feminist movement.

According to Beyonce’s article on Shriver Report, woman only make 77 percent of what the average man makes. It is not that woman are lacking in the workforce either, they make up half of it. The split between men and woman is equal but the pay is not. Times are changing and opportunity should be equal for all regardless of gender, race, ect. A woman should not be told she can not be a construction worker because it is a man’s job just as a man should not be told he can not be a hair stylist because that is woman’s work. Work is work and should not have a gender associated with it. This issue is merely scratching the surface of the inequality that exists.

This inequality exists between both genders, not just women. This is an important fact that many miss. That is why there are so many negative connotations with the word, feminism. Many believe, that claim themselves to be feminists, that it is about praising women and belittling men. These extremists kill the name of feminism. They justify anything that a woman does but criticize that of a man. Yet, when they are asked what they believe feminism is about they will say gender equality. These hypocritical feminists need to open their eyes to what it really means to want gender equality.

As a nation we need to work for each other with each other; we must rid our society of inequality due to sex. Many celebrities are taking a stand and sharing their voice like Beyonce and Emma Watson. It is important for everyone to stand up and have a voice in order to truly make a difference.
