Being asked to dress the First Lady of the United States has long been an honor for American and International designers. As Michelle Obama made history as the first African-American First Lady, married to the first African-American President, designers around the world fought to get the privilege of designing clothes for her. With the election of controversial candidate Donald Trump as the President-elect of the United States, an interesting topic to consider is how designers across the country and around the world would feel about dressing the new First Family.

Melania Trump has largely stayed out of the spotlight throughout her husband’s campaign; rarely making statements at rallies, or even appearing alongside him across the campaign trail. Despite this, she has been the cause of much criticism. At the Republican National Convention, where Melania gave a speech thanking the Republican party for nominating her husband to be their presidential nominee. Critics of the family, as well as the press, noticed that the speech Mrs.Trump gave was an almost identical echo of a speech given by current First Lady Michelle Obama at the Democratic National Convention in 2008. While this may have been the only time Mrs.Trump has truly been in the spotlight, she has also come under fire for not admonishing her husband’s misogynistic comments, even when a videotape was released of him making a crude reference to sexual assault.

With the controversial nature of Trump’s actions and policy plans, it is not at all surprising that critics of him are also wary of his wife. According to Time Magazine, there have already been numerous well-known designers that have publicly denounced the Trump administration, and expressed that they in no way see themselves dressing Melania Trump in the future. While this may not come as a complete surprise to people who are close followers of politics, it is still surprising that American designers as well as designers abroad are not rushing to have their clothes modeled by a First Lady.

On the other hand, there are prominent designers in the fashion industry that have expressed interest in dressing Melania. According to CBS News, designer Carolina Herrera is amongst a small group of fashion giants that have said they would be “honored” to dress the future First Lady. Joining her in this sentiment are American heavyweights Tommy Hilfiger, Diane von Furstenberg, Sam and Libby Edelman, Marcus Wainwright, and Thom Browne. Designers who are undecided include Vera Wang, Michael Kors, Jeremy Scott, Rebecca Minkoff, and Donna Karan, amongst others, according to a list compiled by New York Magazine.

It is extremely difficult to tell what effect a Trump presidency will have on the arts industry, however, designers and artists alike are already making their opinions of the new administration very clear. As we inch forward into a new year and a new presidency, people all across America are forming their own political opinions, and expressing them in ways that allow them to exercise their First Amendment rights. In the face of new challenges that will come with the Trump administration, celebrities and average people alike are taking a stand to say that they are against his policies. Celebrities have a platform to make their voices heard on a national level, which can help make a difference. Hopefully in the future, more celebrities as well as influential people in the arts industries and political spectrum will band together to make a difference and inspire change.
