It’s a new season for the Wakefield basketball team, and with the new season comes new hard working players eager to make their mark on the court. With the introduction of a new coaching staff and the addition of new players, the team hopes to have a successful season, hopefully full of wins. Coach Trent Wilson believes that the teams close bond will help lead them to victory and potentially the State Championship.

“The past couple of years have been rough and a change in coaching strategy was needed, but with all of that taken care of the team can now focus on getting stronger,” Wilson said. “We did a lot of team camps earlier this summer which allowed the kids to bond and has made a big difference in the overall performance of the players.”

Senior Victor Jones agrees that this year’s team is closer than ever and feels as though they are all united. As lead defensive player of the team, he plays an important leadership role within the team’s ranks.

“Being one of the older guys on the team, I try to be encouraging and keep the team together.” Jones said. “We have a hard year ahead of us with teams like Heritage and Millbrook being some of our biggest competition. I’m confident if we keep working hard we’ll be unstoppable.”

This being the last year in the Cap 8, the basketball team strives to end the season at the top of their division. Before achieving this goal, they will need to continue to work as a team and will have to play many opponents. Junior Trent Wilson understands how important it is to put a hundred percent effort into each and every game.

“Being on the Wakefield basketball team has taught me to never give up and to always be encouraging to my teammates,” Wilson said. “ Being part of the team has helped me grow not only as a player, but as a person. If it weren’t for basketball I wouldn’t be who I am today.”

Junior Brendan Ciannamea agrees that over the years all his hard work has really paid off and has allowed him to get where his is now.

“Everyone that is on the team is there because they are talented and willing to put in the work in order to be

successful,” Ciannamea said. “We win as a team and we lose as a team so no matter what we have each others backs.”

Coach Wilson is proud of how his team is coming along and continues to stress the importance of being connected as a team and being supportive of one another.

“I’m excited to see what this season will bring us,” Wilson said. “We have some battles ahead of us, but I’m confident in my team’s abilities and I think we can overcome the challenges.”
