Women’s soccer has high hopes for rest of the season

The Women’s soccer team is making their way through a new season. With a record of 10-6-2 last season, the team plans to gain even more success this season.

This year we hope to finish at the top of our conference and go on a deep run in the state playoffs,” said coach CJ Komons. “I plan to focus on work ethic and discipline as individuals and as a team. I’d like to improve overall from last year; everything can be better.”

Komons is relying on senior captains Kirsten Jording and Courtney Senter to help improve the team.

“I try my best to lead my team in a positive manner, whether that be on the field or off,” said Jording. “I want the girls to know I am there for them no matter what the situation, soccer or not. Setting a good example while still being able to joke around with my teammates is very important to me.”

Jording and Senter share similar thoughts on the team and both do their best to lead by example.

“I lead our team by always staying positive and pushing us all to work hard during practice and games,” said Senter.

The current captains give credit to past captains for lessons on how to lead the team.

“Since freshman year, each group of captains has taught me something different,” said Jording. “That being said, each year they have shown me how important it is to be the glue that keeps the team together. Making sure everyone feels a part of the team is definitely something that I have taken to heart.”

Players on the team appreciate the support from the captains.

“The captains are always positive,” said junior Anna Clark. “They are the most positive people on the team. They are never negative and always try to build us up. They are very inclusive and try to get everyone excited before games.”

Coach Komons also works with the entire team to help motivate the players.

“I try to keep it fun,” said Komons. “To keep them motivated, I try to have them focused on the task at hand that day, and focus on one day at a time.”

Fun is a big part of this team. The players agree that there are many memories made during the season.

“My favorite part of being on the team are the bus rides home after we’ve played a really great game,” said Jording. “We turn our music up really loud and everyone sings at the top of their lungs. It is always a great atmosphere.”

The fact that the team has such a great bond contributes to the fun memories that are made.

“We have all gotten really close since we have been playing together,” said Clark. “Since a majority of the players on the team this year are seniors, it will be really sad when they all leave.”

Although the players will be sad to part at the end of the season, they are focused on enjoying themselves and working hard to make it far in playoffs.

“My favorite part about being on the team is how much fun it is,” said Senter. “Being a senior really makes me realize that every practice and game counts. By staying positive and pushing us all to work hard during practice and games, we hope to win our conference and even win states.”
